Totems are an essential gift to the community. The interconnectedness of all living things and the supernatural can be depicted through some totems. Totems serve a purpose in First Nations communities. That purpose is to share a story. Traditionally an oral culture, stories would be passed on from one generation to the next through art, songs, and stories. There are various types of totems: Welcome Poles, House Poles, Memorial Pole & Mortuary Poles . Totems share family crests and hold a significant story for the community. The community would come together to raise a totem, as it is cultural protocol on the North West Coast.
